What? Me Worry?

One day I was flying home after a devastating meeting with a publisher. My aisle seat was between two young men who were friends. I offered to switch places, but they told me to stay put, and they involved me in their conversation. At one point I shared with them that it had been a no-good, terrible day. When I explained why, one man said, “Work? Is that all?” Hmm. That comment certainly put things in perspective. I was in perfect health, my family was well, I had meals three times a day, and a roof over my head. I believe the Holy Spirit consoled me that day through my fellow passenger.

Besides speaking to us through other people, at times, God speaks very clearly in Scripture. Right before my annual retreat something occurred with a publisher that jeopardized an entire project. I was in deep trouble. I thought, “Oh, no. I’m going to stew over this all week and my retreat will be ruined.” But then, I took refuge in my Bible through which God touched me on previous occasions. I opened it at random. My eyes fell on this verse: “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you” (Isaiah 43:2). God’s words brought me comfort and peace.

Recently someone pointed out that in Matthew 6:25–34, Jesus says, “Do not worry,” five times!

You may be perplexed, worried, downhearted, or despairing. We all experience life as a roller coaster with ups and downs. During the down times, let one or more of the following “words of salvation” touch your heart. Hear God speak to you personally:

“Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act.” (Psalm 37:5)

“Even the hairs of your head are all counted. so do not be afraid; you are of more value that many sparrows.” (Matthew 10:30)

“I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory about to be revealed to us.”” (Romans 8:18)

“We know that all things work together for good for those who love God.” (Romans 8:28)

“Be strong and courageous; do not be frightened or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9)

“Don’t be fear, for I am with you, do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you. I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)

“He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.” (Psalm 91:4)

“For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation, he alone is my rock and my salvation my fortress; I shall never be shaken.” (Psalm 62:1–2)

“I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13)

“For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11)
